Why is maintenance of the sound installation important?

The dangers of malfunctioning audio equipment

The importance of well functioning audio equipment isn’t just protecting the investment. A malfunctioning installation can also cause annoyance to customers or even bring about dangerous situations. Life threatening situations can occur if the voice alarm system shuts down. And what about the long queues that might form in front of the cash registers if the public address system in the store or supermarket stops working? What if it isn’t possible to properly communicate with customers through the glass in a petrol station, because of a defective intercom? Or if hearing aid wearers can’t hear the message, due to the induction loop being out of order. It slows down customer service, and in some cases even disables it.

Expand the lifespan of the installation

Preferably, one would like a voice alarm system, public address system, intercom system, induction loop or sound installation to operate well at all times. Unfortunately, malfunctioning can’t always be prevented, but it’s possible to reduce it to a minimum. By performing regulair maintenance, the functioning and worth of the system are preserved more. It also expands the lifespan of the equipment and prevents potentially costly repairs.

Plan regulair maintenance

For most installations Tau advises to carry out maintenance, yearly. Doing so, generally expands the lifespan of the equipment with a couple of years and reduces the rick of malfunctioning to a minimum. The maintenance frequency, of course, depends on the kind of application, the intensity with which the installation is used and the importance of the system to the organisation. Some examples of the possibilities for maintenance:

  • Maintaining (spoken word) voice alarm systems: this type of maintenance  consists of a checkup of the functioning of the central equipment, like the amplifier, processors and batteries. In addition, the control of the fire alarm system is tested. The functioning and intelligibility of the loudspeakers will also be checked, through a functional test.
  • Maintaining public address systems: the central equipment, such as amplifiers, mixers and controllers, is checked. In addition, the functioning of the microphones and loudspeakers is tested.
  • Maintaining intercom systems: Tau’s intercom systems are self-learning and will usually correct the functioning themselves. It is definitely a good idea to test the systems functioning every now and then and check whether the mounting is still decent.
  • Maintaining induction loops: it’s important to test the field strength. This test will verify whether or not the veld is still active in accordance within the norm. The central equipment, like the amplifier, is also checked. In addition, the initial projection will be re-evaluated, to check that it’s still fitting the layout of the building, for example after remodelling the interior.
  • Maintaining sound installations: a check of the central equipment, like amplifiers, mixers and controllers, takes place. The functioning of the loudspeakers in the field is also tested.
